Welcome to a further issue of our ad-hoc newsletters. This edition features a number of new releases, including an exciting new range of scenic items, together with some new publications, locomotives, rolling stock and details of advance orders for the totally new Powerline NSW 48 class DE loco.

PUBLICATIONS

Train Hobby has released the following books – Locomotive Profiles – NSW 80 Class DE Locomotives and Locomotive Profiles – NSW 59 Class Steam Locomotives. Both books are 56 pages of colour, featuring photos of most of the locos in their class. The 80 class operated over most areas of the state, with the exception of the lighter branch lines. All liveries have been featured, and there are a variety of trains being operated from the Indian Pacific to smaller freights, and bulk coal haulage. This reflects their versatility as a general purpose loco. The 59 class operated mainly on the North Coast and Northern lines, the Southern Highlands and around Bathurst, and the variety of photos reflects this. For those who want to super detail their locos, both books offers a wealth of quality photos, which will aid super-detailing. Our price is $37 for either book.

Narrow Gauge Downunder 35 is in stock and costs $12.00. This issue features articles on kit bashing a vertical boiler Shay, an Sn3 layout, QR rail ambulances, an article on accessing specific railway images in library databases, modelling sugar cane, plus a number of other articles.

The 2010 AMRM calendar has arrived. It is in the usual double-sided format, with twelve steam scenes on one side and twelve diesel scenes on the other, so you can choose what mode of operation you want to display. Most states are featured ranging from several vintage steam shots to the latest Pilbara diesels. Our price for the calendar is $17.00.

NEW ITEMS

Caintode Flats has released the Queensland Railways CLC steel louvre van. This is a round roof van, introduced as part of the QGR’s move to more modern wagons. Initially for passenger trains, some problems saw them relegated to goods trains only, and many were in service until the 1980’s. Some remain today as service vans. They had several liveries from oxide red, through the yellow Brisbane Coordinated Toowoomba service, to the later freight grey. The kit features a one-piece body, separate underframe, assembled bogies, decals and brass and white metal detail parts. Our price is $45.95.

Mininatur Silhouette is a new range of scenic accessories, which are very realistic. They produce a number of items ranging from sheets of pasture types to individual items such as ivy vines, hay, pine foliage, and a number of grasses. For the pasture types, there is a different colouring for each of the seasons. The pastures with cowpats are very realistic, even if some of the cowpats look a little larger than life! For those modelling outback areas, there are canola fields. The beauty of the foliage materials is that those attached to sheets, can be removed and placed line side or in other areas to represent clumps of weeds, or unkempt areas. Prices vary, but the small packs start from about $10.

Boots Bits is a new manufacturer from Victoria who has produced three passenger car interiors to suit the Powerline Victorian AS, BS and ABS cars. The packs comprize printed card partitions, with additional material for shaping the seats. The partitions need colouring to finish, but when completed make into a nicely detailed interior, just waiting for a few passengers. These will definitely enhance the interiors of those empty coaches you have, and cost $16.50 each.

Powerline has commenced deliveries of their new batch of T Cl DE locos. These are as good as the first run, if not better as they have re-designed the packaging to remove any chance of the handrails or coupler lift bars to become damaged during transit. There are several number variations in this shipment, together with the introduction of the H class variants and new road names, such as the colourful Great Northern, and York Peninsula Railway. While not all are in stock at present, we will contact all those customers with orders as they arrive. Our price for the new run locos is $260.00 each.

BGB Models has recently started catching up with the vast backlog of orders, and are implementing a new number range at the same time. The first available kits we have from the new range are the SAR M bogie van in Metters, Caltex, Brighton Cement, Farmer’s Union and West End beer liveries all at $29.25 each, the SAR D bogie van at $21.95 each, the VR FJ 4 wheel flour pots in Bunge Flour livery at $34.50 each, the VR VLEX bogie louvre van at $22.50, and the AN AOOX open wagon at $30.50 each. All the above bogie wagons need appropriate bogies while the four-wheel wagons include wheels. Progress is being made on the back-orders, but production is still quite limited and we are getting less than 50% of our orders filled each time. Nevertheless, we are clearing some of the back-orders, and most will eventually be filled. A revised price list is now on our web site.

EXPECTED PRODUCTS

Caintode Flats expects to provide stocks of the QR BLC louvre vans at the forthcoming Queensland Model Train Show at the Ipswich Museum (see below).

PGC has received first stocks of the QR QLX bogie louvre van from England and these are currently being packed. I expect the kits to be available at the Ipswich show as well. Both the full louvre and the semi louvre styles will be sold singly and in two packs. The kit will also include buffers, decals, detail parts, assembled white metal bogies and bogie mounting screws.

Powerline has advised that the next wagon in their rolling stock range is due shortly. This will be the Vline/AN VKOX slab steel wagon and its variants. There are four codes, depending on the ownership era ranging from VKOX and RKUX in both Vline and no logo versions, and the AKBX and RKBX in AN livery. Photos of these models show they are up to the high standard of the recent ELX/VOCX wagons, which sold out within a couple of months. They feature metal wheels, Kadee couplers and are RTR. The expected price will be about $36.50 for Kadee coupler versions and $34 for Euro style couplings. These are due this month and advance orders indicate they will also be a very popular wagon.

POWERLINE NSW 48 CL DE LOCO

Powerline has opened the books for orders on their next diesel, which will be a completely new model of the NSW 48 cl DE loco. The initial run will be in the Tuscan livery and there will be four different marks produced. The model will feature a highly detailed body, 5 pole can motor, twin flywheels and all wheel pick-up. I expect delivery in early 2011. A special offer of $265 will be available for all orders received by 31 December 2008 and accompanied by an $80 deposit. After that, the expected price rise to about $300. Initial test shots I have seen show a very high standard of detail on the body, so I expect it to be of similar quality and finish to the VR T class. Subsequent runs will produce different schemes. To order, send your details with the deposit to reach us by the above date.

GENERAL NEWS

The annual Queensland Model Railway Show will be held at the Workshops Rail Museum on 24 and 25 October. Opening hours are from 9.30 am till 5.00 pm on both days. Admission is $18.50 adults, children $10 and concession holders are $15.50 each. A family pass, which covers two adults and up to 4 children, is $55.00. Horizon Hobbies will have a trade stand at the show, and we look forward to catching up with you during the show. There is plenty of parking at the museum and public transport is available by train to Ipswich station, and connecting bus to the museum.

Happy modelling for now,

John Guest
