Welcome to another end of year newsletter. (Where does the year go?) There are several new items featured in this issue, including rolling stock and detail parts, books, CDs, and a new pre-owned list. PUBLICATIONS Train Hobby has released the following books: Sydney Terminal – The Steam Station featuring a profile of train activity at Sydney from the mid 1950’s until 1983, and Western Australian Steam. Both books are 56 pages of colour, and packed with interesting photos of their subject title. Our price is $37 each. ARHS has released two new books. The first is Boilers, Beauforts and Bogies, which I consider to be a very well researched book covering the Chullora railway workshops in Sydney. The period covered is from 1913 until government policy changes saw them close in 2000. The workshops staff employed many technical skills for loco and rolling stock repairs and put these skills to good use for manufacture of aircraft during the war years. It is profusely illustrated and with over 200 pages, represents good value with our price being $46.50. The second book is Sydney’s Forgotten Industrial Railways, another in the “Forgotten” series by John Oakes. It covers some lesser-known lines as well as those with which we are more familiar. Some of the lines covered include Carlingford, Sandown, Potts Hill, Duck River, Alexandria goods yard, Meadowbank wharf, and Navy lines at several locations. The book is well illustrated, and our price is $26.75. Eveleigh Publications has released Byways of Steam 26. Among the stories featured are railways and collieries of the West Wallsend district, the Far West Children’s Health Scheme and its mobile clinics, Mount Victoria depot, and timber tramways. This edition is up to the high standards set by previous issues, and is profusely illustrated, with photos and maps where appropriate. Our price is $38. Eveleigh has also released Indian Pacific, which is another in their Australian Trains series. This A5 book of 64 pages, provides a brief history of the origins of the train, then covers operation during several eras, up to the present day. It provides details on timetables, locos and rolling stock and is well illustrated throughout with mainly all colour photographs of the various operator hauled trains. Our price is $19. Eveleigh has also released the first four volumes of the Australian Model Railway Magazine on CD. Each CD covers one particular volume, so you generally have access to twelve issues (sometimes eleven). So for those who don’t have access to the early issues, here is one means of completing your collection of issues that are very hard to obtain in hard copy. Our price is $24.25 per CD. NEW ITEMS We are now carrying the range of Sydney Hobbies and Lit’le Trains detailing parts, wagon kits and passenger car interiors. While the interiors, wagons and loads are designed to fit NSW wagons, some of the loads can be adapted to fit other railway rolling stock. There are wagon kits for the NSW TE flat wagon (for tank transport), WSC sleeper wagon, GME container wagon, TME tube steel load wagon, and FME for transport of LCL containers. The kits include bogies and decals with prices ranging from $36 to $45. In addition, they produce wagon loads comprising wool bales, oil drums, timber and an assorted load for NSW K and S 4 wheel open wagons, interior kits for NSW MBEs, MFEs, FJs, BJs, FS, BS, SFS, SBS, RS and FO/BI passenger cars. As well there are sides to make NSW MCE composite cars, AB91/92 dining cars, MAL sleepers, and a number of detail parts to assist in detailing NSW 72’ 6” cars. Lit’le Trains kits feature some NSW relay huts, Kadee adapters for a number of Austrains diesels, timber platform edging, and loads for NSW S and K wagons. Keiran Ryan Models has released a detail kit for the NSW MRC refrigerator wagon. This kit comprises a large number of brass etchings to suit both the LMR and Silvermaz kit. Our price is $9.90. Caintode Flats has released the Queensland Railways BLC steel louvre van. This is a Mansard roof van, introduced as part of the QGR’s move to more modern wagons. Their design was the forerunner to the QLX range, and there are several still in use as service vans today. The livery when introduced was freight grey. The kit features a one-piece body, separate underframe, assembled bogies, decals and white metal detail parts. Our price is $44.95. PGC has released the QR QLX bogie louvre van in both versions – full louvred and semi-louvred end. They are available singly for $59.50 or in twin packs of either or both styles for $115. The kit includes buffers, decals, detail parts, assembled white metal bogies and bogie mounting screws. Photos of the BLC, CLC and QLX will appear in the next issue of AMRM. We now have good stocks of Auscision Models’ Vline A cl DE loco in all liveries. These locos were remanufactured B class locos, giving them a longer life, and most are still operating today. The model features a can motor with twin flywheels, Kadee® couplers, details specific to certain locos and the finished product is up to the very high standards I have come to expect of Auscision products. Our price for all variants is $295 per loco. Please note the “Melbourne Olympics” colour scheme has sold out. Also from Auscision are the twin pack 20’conatiners in all new road names at $24.95 per pack, NSW SRA and Pacific National NHLF limestone hoppers at $289.95 per pack of six cars, stocks of the NSW CQBY and VR XCS bogies at $9.95/pair, and wheelsets in both 33” and 36” diameter at $14.95/pack. We have received stocks of the Powerline Vline/AN VKOX slab steel wagon and its variants. There are four codes, depending on the ownership era ranging from VKOX and RKUX in both Vline and no logo versions, and the AKBX and RKBX in AN livery. These maintain the high standard seen of other items made in China these days. They feature metal wheels and Kadee couplers with Euro style couplers available as an option. Our price is $34.95 for the Kadee version, and $32.50 for Euro style couplings. Imex has produced a number of assembled buildings that are suitable for use on Australian layouts. They are pre-painted and we have the following in stock – Quonset hut (both new and rusty types) ($24.25 each), fuel tank – similar to those used by narrow gauge cane and industrial railways (two or three tank styles with fuel nozzles) ($23 each) as well as a single tank for $19. Testors have released a very useful tool for modellers. It is tack cloth, and is ideal for use around the modelling bench. Its purpose is to pick up dust and other small particles and prepare models for painting. It can be used on plastic, resins and metal to name a few. Our price is $5.50. Testor's has also released a scriber, which is very handy for scribing plastics, timber and light metals. Our price is $15.35. EXPECTED PUBLICATIONS Eveleigh Press expects to publish in the week before Christmas O B Bolton - Engine Portraits featuring the photographs of this well known modelling pioneer. These are all black and white photos of mainly NSW locos from the earlier part of last century. O B Bolton was a person well noted for his endeavours in manufacturing large scale castings for live steam locos. Our expected price is $57. ARHS plans to publish a two-volume set - Coal, Railways and Mines, which will cover the colliery lines and early shipping facilities of the Newcastle district. It will be a companion to the first volume – The Railways of J & A Brown, which is still available ($82.50). These will be massive books (over 1100 pages) with an expected price of $275 for the two-volume set. Numbers being produced are strictly limited, so I recommend that anyone wanting copies order quickly to avoid disappointment. Publication is now expected in early 2010. EXPECTED PRODUCTS Auscision’s VR B cl DE loco should be in stock within the next week or so. The price will be $295, and it should be available in all schemes, although pre-orders indicate some won’t last very long. PRICE RISES (and the US Dollar) We have had to increase the price of most Testors items including Glosscote, Dullcote and Decal Bonder Spray. The rise has been small (about 30c), and many are querying why the prices are increasing when the Aussie dollar is up against the US dollar. What I have found is that although the dollar has increased in value there has been an increase in freight rates, especially for dangerous goods classified items, and this is offsetting any gain through a better buying price. Customers should also realize that many of the items coming from overseas are manufactured in China or Europe and the exchange rate is not as good against these countries currencies. As well, the contracts for many items have been entered into well before the current improvement in our dollar. GENERAL NEWS Don’t forget time is running out to place an order for the new Powerline NSW 48 cl DE loco. The special offer of $265 will be available for all orders received by 31 December 2009 and accompanied by an $80 deposit. After that, the price is expected to rise to about $300. It is that time of the year when modelling can and does take a back seat to the importance of being with your loved ones. We have received many cards from customers and appreciate the thoughts you have provided therein. If you are uncertain what to give as a surprise for that special someone, don’t forget we have a few AMRM calendars left at $17 or you can purchase our Gift Vouchers with value starting from $10. We would like to take this opportunity to thank you for your ongoing support through the year, and wish you and your loved ones a safe and happy festive season. We will be closed on Saturday 26 December and again on Monday 28 December, re-opening on Tuesday 29 December at 10.00 am. We would certainly like to see you in the shop before Christmas and hope you will partake of some tasty Christmas cake, and a cuppa.
