Welcome to another in our series of ad-hoc newsletters. Featured in this issue are several new arrivals, together with another pre-owned list, including rarely available models of Queensland prototypes. PUBLICATIONS Train Hobby has released the following book: Railscene Volume 13 – NSW Candy Era. This book features a wide variety of photos of locos and trains in a number of locations throughout the state. While many considered the candy livery as being somewhat bright and toylike, it certainly was a major change from the Indian red era and definitely got the railways noticed by passengers and railfans alike. The book has 96 pages, which are all colour in landscape format. Our price is $57. Sierra Publications has published a book entitled Railways of the Yarra Valley. This is a 96 page small format book covering the Victorian Railway’s branch lines from Lilydale to Healesville, and from Lilydale to Warburton. A wide photographic coverage is provided with most in colour, although there are several historic black and white photos from the early 20th century. In addition private tramways abounded in the area, including the well known Powelltown and Britannia Creek tramways, and coverage of these is included. There is a potted history of each line, together with some plans and a wealth of detail photographs. At $29.95 it is recommended. Eveleigh has released three books in the last couple of months. The first is Spirit of Progress. This is in similar format to their Newcastle Express and Indian Pacific books and covers operations, make-up and some timetable journeys of the train that initially ran from Spencer Street, Melbourne to the break-of-gauge station at Albury on the NSW/Victorian border. It eventually ran as a standard gauge train through to Sydney, and was regarded by most as Victoria’s premier passenger train. Initially hauled by VR’s streamlined S class pacific loco, in later years it was hauled by B and S class diesels, before a variety of locos took over in its final years. Our price is $19.00 for this 64 page soft covered book. The second from Eveleigh is 46 – Portrait of a Classic, which is a highly regarded book covering the design, introduction, and operation of the NSW 46 class electric loco. It has many previously unreleased photos, and contains a vast wealth of information both for the railfan and modeller alike. At over 190 pages, and priced at $67.50, I consider it to be good value, especially for those showing an interest in the electrified side of operations. The third book is entitled Clydes among the Cane. It is a landscape format all colour book of 64 pages, and covers some sugar railways in Fiji. The photos are of good quality, and show the trains in a variety of locations around the mills of Viti Levu. The somewhat ramshackle appearance shows that not a lot of money is spent on the railways in a somewhat difficult economic environment, and this adds to the charm of the trains and the photos. I consider it is somewhat reminiscent of 1960’s Queensland cane operations. Our price for this book is $38.00. NEW ITEMS We now carry Rail Central’s range of NSW structures and lineside accessories. These are styrene kits made in China, and include the NSW Pc1, Pc2 and Pc3 station kits and the Pc3 station building in partially assembled form, with details parts included. Also available are separate platform extension packs, featuring platform straights, end ramps and end blocks, and three types of buffer. All kits are easy to assemble. Details can be found on our website under Price Lists/Miscellaneous Building Kits. Stocks of the 1950 Vanguard sedan from Weico have arrived, with the first shipment selling out in just over a week. This model appears to be one of their better reproductions and captures the curved back very well. While very few are around today, they lasted in to the 1960’s and 70s. Our price is $16.75. Main West has released two new detail kits. The first is a fan grill for the NSW 48 CL DE loco. Priced at $5, fitting this improves the look of the locos noticeably. A set of hopper door release handles has also been released for the BCH/BWH hoppers. Again, these add a lot of detail to your model for just $5. Keiran Ryan Models has released a set of brass loco numerals that adorned the sides of the South Maitland Railways tank locos. Each set contains a fret of numbers and are priced at $9.25. Chuck’s Ballast Supplies has now released coal in 150 gram packs. Or price is $3.95. The previous size was 500 grams, and this smaller size will be welcome by many modellers wanting a lesser amount. EXPECTED PUBLICATIONS Train Hobby has announced the imminent release of a further book in their Railscene series. This will feature operations of the former Commonwealth Railways. A subject which is of interest to an increasing number of modellers. Further details will be released when available.
